How to find your path knowing your values

Updated: Mar 15, 2023

What are your top five values? If you are taking more than a couple of minutes to provide an answer, then consider this: your purposeful path depends on you knowing your top values. If you are wondering how you got to where you are now, feel confused or stuck in moving forward, and want to transform your life, read on. You can make empowering decisions in areas of your life that are within your control to create the change you desire, one step at a time. One very important step to launch your life transformation is to get clear on your most important, heartfelt, and inspiring values. Having clear values will help shine a bright light on your joyful life vision and the path to it. To help you along, below I share seven life coaching tips that will help you identify your values, apply them to your daily life, and week after week transform your life.

1. Notice what motivates you. The most lasting form of motivation is your inner motivation. By noticing what motivates you, you can distinguish the external from the internal motivators in your life. By connecting with that which motivates you from the inside out vs the outside in, you set yourself up with the endurance you will need to transform your life. Transforming your life is like running a marathon. You need the endurance and resilience to make it to the end of the course. You need the positive psychology and clear unobstructed focus on your vision. High-performing athletes, professionals and entrepreneurs practice this type of visioning daily that is driven by their clear values.

2. Build self-awareness through experience. Transforming your life takes time, patience and self-compassion. Your life experiences are the lessons that can help build your self-awareness and growth. By journaling your life experiences, you can discover the values that resonate the most with you. Work with a journal that can inspire you and hold you accountable, weekly at a minimum, with structured questions and inspiring life quotes, such as Live an Inspired Life.

3. Prioritize your most meaningful values. To stay focused and use your energy wisely, you will need to narrow down your top three to five values, in order of priority. The steps you will take to transform your life will need to be prioritized according to your prioritized values. Time management is essential when it comes to transforming your life and sustaining work-life balance. This means that some tasks, outings, and events will need to be dropped to make room for what you want more of in your life.

4. Believe in yourself manifesting your desired outcomes. When embarking on a transformational life journey, all the self-doubt and self-limiting beliefs will creep right on out. By knowing that this is a natural emotional process that occurs when trying to create a significant change in your life, you can allow it to expand your mind, growth and confidence. I go into more detail on this in my book, LITE Up Your Work and Life. Essentially, by identifying your self-limiting beliefs, you can replace them with empowering ones. The key is to experience your new empowering beliefs repeatedly to reinforce a new way of being, and a renewed confidence that is full of presence in the moment. This confidence will carry you forward, help you embrace your new reality, and resiliently rise above any disappointments or obstacles along the way.

5. Fill the learning gaps. To become your envisioned future self in your transformed life, there may be areas of improvement to address. You can fill the learning gaps by leveraging all available resources within your means. So much is available online. Once you are clear on what those learning gaps are, you can also reach out to your circle of friends and family for the help you need to grow into your future self. Look for people who can mentor you and/or coach you. Choose mentors who have succeeded in an area you are interested in, and choose certified coaches who are trained to bring out people’s full potential. You may even be able to find a mentor who knows how to coach. Just be aware, that mentoring and coaching are different.

6. Make your life transformation happen. Every small step you take consistently on a daily basis has a compound effect, just like money in the bank earning daily interest. By taking action on a clear plan founded on your values, priorities and commitment, you will move forward. You will also need to course correct along the way based on your review of your progress six months to a year later. You need a solid foundation as in the previous five tips I shared above. You know you have hit the mark when you find yourself self-motivated every morning waking up with a clear sense of direction. Without such a clear direction, some of your steps may feel meaningless and wasteful when they may, in fact, be just what you need to get to where you want to go.

7. Feel the joy on your transformational journey. There is a sense of relief knowing why you are doing what you are doing. Following the tips above will set you up for more joy in your life. As my wise yoga teacher once said, it is better to have tried and failed, than not try at all. Try on this perspective of your life and see how you feel. You may need affirmations, inspirational quotes and reminders for yourself to sustain this renewed perspective on your life journey.
