How to enjoy the holiday festivities healthily!

There was a time when I would tell myself "Ok, Christmas is near and the December festivities are going to throw my diet out the window!" I think I was just giving myself permission to be naughty with food! Only problem was, every year it got harder and harder to make up for this abandon. Losing the extra pounds and maintaining healthier bloodwork got harder with each passing year. Our metabolism changes as we age. To stay healthy, we need to have discipline and a system around our nutrition.

Balance out your nutrition to enjoy the holiday festivities healthily.
So many protein powder options to choose from!

The more confident we feel, the better care we give ourself. Instead of feeling powerless around our food consumption over the holidays, there is another way; what I call the middle way in body, mind and soul. Below are some ideas on how to enjoy the holiday festivities healthily in body, mind and soul! This by no means replaces your medical doctor's or nutritionist's advice. If you have a medical condition, please refer back to your medical care team's guidance.

  1. Acknowledge the connection between your body, mind and soul. Your emotional experiences continuously shape your thoughts and beliefs. Unless handled with the utmost self-awareness, wisdom and discernment, they will either reinforce the same old feelings and underlying beliefs or help you rise above them. Your thought patterns have the power to elevate your body, mind and soul connection. With the holiday season being full of anticipation, expectation, participation, celebration, and preparation, a host of emotions get triggered and emerge. There is no greater time to train your mind by clearing and healing anything and everything that you know in your gut has held you back from living your best life. The more at peace you are within, the better your outlook and choices will be. Need a little help with that? Work through whatever you need to with my self-coaching book, LITE Up Your Work and Life (recommended in the HR Professional Magazine in 2013).

  2. Elevate your soul with mindful practices. Tuning into yourself in the midst of your daily life experiences with mindful yoga and meditation practices, breathwork, and journaling can help clear your mind, heal your heart, and revitalize your body. While the holiday season can get busy, carving out 5 to 20 minutes a day to stop, tune in, breathe deeply, and be present, is fundamental to sustaining your vitality and uplifting your spirit. Tuning in with mindful practices is what self-awarenesss is made of. The greater your self-awareness, the greater wisdom and discernment you will be able to apply to your life with acceptance, healthy boundaries, and compassion (for self and others).

  3. Set yourself up for a healthy balance of holiday feasts and nutritional products. I don't know about you, but when I indulge over the holiday feasts, without some compensation elsewhere in my day, I feel sluggish. I love doing both; indulging in the holiday festivities and compensating with healthy living habits. I feel a whole lot better physically, mentally, emotionally and energetically when I balance things out. I balance things out by:

    1. maintaining my healthy living habits with Arbonne's 30 Days to Healthy Living or Healthy Habits Set with Essential Meal Replacement Shake; and

    2. preparing healthy-ish Christmas baking, desserts and meals in advance. For baking, I use healthier alternatives to refined sugars, such as swerve sweetener and icing sugar, coconut sugar, honey or maple syrup. Same goes for the flour I use. I will often use almond, coconut, oat, rice or chickpea flour. I make sure I have some of my favourite go to snacks handy, such as mixed nuts, non-gmo pop corn, organic chocolate with 70% to 95% cocoa, a variety of cheeses, brown rice crackers, hummus, avocados, and chopped veggies to dip. I also get saucy with homemade orange cranberry and apple sauces used as toppings for breakfast, dessert or cheese appetizers. Homemade beef chilli, chicken, turkey or bean stews, and pea or root vegetable soups are frozen and ready to heat and eat. Batch cooking is great for those days where I just want to relax and watch prime videos with my kitties all snuggled up to me, or a friend who happens to spontaneously drop by. Lastly, I load up on my greens to level up my protein shakes, and make salads or homemade pesto sauce for that quick pasta dish I can throw together in minutes.

You know the saying? We share our love from a place of self-love! Isn't that what the spirit of Christmas and the holiday season is all about? Love; a love that is expressed from the inside out.
